Do you think of food in terms of good food and bad food? OK, pretty normal but it is just one of the many ways we sabotage ourselves without realizing that we are doing it. You see we humans are wicked creatures... well many of us are and we are drawn to that which tempts us.

We call bad food that oooey, gooey, icky, sticky, sweet, salty, crunchy, munchy stuff that's pretty damn tempting and tastes good. And if something tempts you it always will, make it a no, no or label it bad and you are just asking for trouble. Well that's how I roll baby and I think I am safe in saying so do most people who struggle with their weight.

So I am going to make this one easier for you, food is food good bad or otherwise it is all food the only difference is what you get from the food you eat.

From now on I want you to think of food in terms of ENERGY DENSE FOOD or NUTRIENT DENSE FOOD.

Energy dense food will give you a high level of calories and very little if any nutrient. This is energy dense food:

Nutrient dense food will give you calories and nutrients. This is nutrient dense food.

Before you put something in your mouth look at it and ask yourself "what will this food give me?"

You will not always eat just nutrient dense food there will be days when you are tired, stressed or emotional when your body will seek fast sources of energy, be mindful of those days and try an alternative to fast energy sources. You may also chose to have a cheat day which I highly recommend you do, I'll blog on when to introduce a cheat day soon. And it's not about being perfect, perfect is boring but almost perfect gives you room to play and enjoy life without feeling deprived. If you eat mainly nutrient dense foods the odd little discrepancy or a cheat day won't hurt but if you are eating energy dense foods most days of the week you will need to change the habit to achieve your weight loss goals.

One of the best ways to educate yourself on what you are eating is to read your Nutritional Information Panels or the N.I.P for short. Read your N.I.P's please people's they are on the back of your packets and list the ingredients in order of biggest amount to least amount. If your first ingredient is sugar ditch it and chose something else. I use an app call 'FoodSwitch' to do this I scan in the barcode of what I want to eat and get a better choice, check back soon for my blog on 'FoodSwitch'.

If every ingredient you read on the food of your choice has numbers or symbols it's probably not even really food so make a healthier choice.
